NOTES FROM THE OTHER WORLD (#11)
05 June 2003
Taken From: Burrn Magazine (Dec 97) #11

Hello from Argentina! It?s summer down here and the rest of the band and I really enjoy this place. Touring at this furious pace gives me too little time to reflect on the great memories of the Japan tour that we just did. I haven?t had time to write back to all the fans who gave me letters in Japan but be patient, if you wrote me your address, I?ll get back to you for sure. South America is a different world for Megadeth. We are pretty famous here and none of us can leave the hotel without bodyguards accompanying us. There are many fans camped outside the front of the hotel all day and all night long. That?s kind of fun for a while but I can tell you that it must be hard to be Michael Jackson. Even the smallest thing takes a whole production to arrange. I like to see some of the cities that I travel to and for example, here in Buenos Aires, it takes a lot of planning and confusion just to get me to take a walk down a city street. Eating at a restaurant is an equally strenuous task.

On a lighter note, coming to South America directly after Japan really made me feel good about my Japanese speaking. When I was in Japan this tour, I took it almost for granted that I could communicate with anyone in Japan with no problem and I enjoyed speaking with everybody all day and night. When I arrived in South America I went to a jeans shop without a translator. I know ZERO Spanish. It took me almost 45 minutes to explain the color and the size that I wanted! That made me realize that I was just as comfortable in Japan speaking Japanese as I am in the U.S. speaking English! Now if I could only write 2,000 Kanji?

Most Americans, particularly those who live in the western part of the U.S. like do, speak or understand at least a little Spanish. Despite my touring Spanish countries for years, I still know almost zero! It?s a beautiful culture, though. Women carry themselves with pride and they like to show off their bodies regardless of whether they are in the same shape as Cindy Crawford or not. In the U.S., women are so self-conscious about their weight; they are ashamed if they are not ?perfect?, that?s why many women in the U.S. are so dull looking. They are afraid to attract any attention to themselves. It seems that in Latin countries they believe that the body is sexy whatever shape it is in. That?s great. They seem to have a real passion for life. This translates to our fans at our concerts. South America, and particularly Argentina, is a great territory for Megadeth. Our music is very passionate, moody, human and sweaty and I think those words describe the South Americans, so maybe that?s the connection?Like Japan, they know and appreciate the small details of our music. But whereas Japanese audiences respectfully and quietly enjoy our shows, South American audiences scream every lyric (and even some guitar melodies!) at the top of their voices. They?ve even created their own ?song? which they sing along with the guitar riff of ?Symphony of Destruction???Megadeth, Megadeth, Aguante Megadeth!!? This has quite an effect when you hear 25,000 fans singing together. I think it means something like,? Ganbare Megadeth!!?
