QUESTION: |
|
|
While listening to BAD D.N.A. I can't help but think, 'How did he think of this?' Did it just 'come out'? Were the skeletons of the songs made by noodling around? How did it all work?
By the way, I saw your answer for a question a while ago, you said your playing style is mostly based on nuances which you've never taught. If one was to try to learn these nuances (no matter how much time it took) how would you suggest someone do it?
Does holding the pick the way you do have a big impact on your sound? (Big question, I always debate with friends about this one!)
Thank you so much Marty. I know you're busy, but I'd really like an answer to these questions, please. |

Thanks for the Q`s.
BAD D.N.A was unusual for me as the basic song structures were all written in a week long marathon writing session in Singapore, and then all solos and embellishments were created in the actual recording stage.
The way to learn nuances is take slow passages and listen extremely closely and match even the slightest detail. This is a great ability to have, and you should analyze the details of your own playing the same way. For example, when you harmonize your lines, it is much better to match every single shake of your vibrato rather than just playing the right notes.
There is no right way to hold a pick. Look at the goofy way I hold mine- It works for me, and that`s all that matters. I seriously doubt there is sonically a big impact, if any, no matter how you hold a pick. Even if there is, who cares? Much more important than that is the content of what you are playing. Best of luck. |
