  QUESTION:

Hi Marty. How many times a day do you practice? I play bass and for some reason I don't realize that even famous musicians sit down to practice. I am the type that wants things yesterday..and that never works when I'm trying to learn something new. I am becoming increasingly annoyed with myself. Many tell me I'm making excuses for not practicing, but I am stuck. I feel lonely when I practice alone. I just wish I could find people to play with. It never works out because they tell me I am not good enough for their band. I lack the skill of scales, following a drummer-basic stuff and because of that I just don't bother. I don't want to let this pass me by but I don't know how to get started. Sure it's excuses and I know I'm smarter than this but what do you do when you are in a rut? How you strengthen your concentration?

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

{ I am the type that wants things yesterday..} Boy are you in trouble... Music is an endless amount of work, lined with tiny achievements along the way. After a long while, before you know it those achievements may add up to some pretty cool things, but if you ever stop and dwell on them, you`re done. My advice is get off your rear and do whatever it takes so that others will want to play with you. Or else give up and stop torturing yourself over it. Good luck.
