  QUESTION:

Hey Marty, happy new years:). I'm a musician from Toronto, I'm just about to turn 19 on the 6th. I've been called in to start writing music for an anime in Japan( on the contract can't say much) and I'm soon bound to go there. And I was wondering if it's better to be a high skilled guitarist in Japan than in the (3 chord loving) U.S.A.? My second question is: What is it that you love of the music scene in Japan that you did not find in American? Thank you for your time. -Manny

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

What is a "high skilled" guitarist? And what is "3 chord loving USA"? It sounds like you have a negative outlook right from the start (normal at 19 though...I was the worst around that time...) if you really want a jump on the game, try instead of dismissing something for one reason or another, think of why something is successful, why people love it, what kind of work goes into it and what you can learn from it. Japan is like anywhere else, all kinds of music available. For me I really liked the pop music in Japan because it can still be pop while having extremely adventurous arrangements as well as being open to my aggressive guitar playing.
