  QUESTION:

Hi Marty. I just wanted to say that I am a huge fan and that you have inspired me to learn Japanese. I have begun to teach myself and am learning some very basic vocabulary. However, since I am unable to take a class at my local Junior college until next summer (It is too hard to balance a formal Japanese class with honors/AP classes at my high school. My high school also does not offer Japanese.) I do not know what to do next. Should I learn to read and write Kana or Hiragana? I have no idea what to do. Any suggestions would be great. On another note, I have just joined a thrash metal band. But I don't play guitar, bass, or drums...I play the highland Bagpipes. What is your opinion on the bagpipes in rock/metal music? I love all of your music, especially your work in megadeth. Good luck with all of your upcoming touring. Sincerely, Grant

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

I`m a big fan of adding new sounds to music so rock out with your bagpipes! Your Japanese situation will have you improving at a slow rate...I suggest you keep it as a hobby and learn at your own pace. Reading and writing ALL 3 forms of Japanese is Key! Good luck.
