  QUESTION:

Dear Marty Friedman, I am very amazed to see how you help your fans. You are like a counsellor helping people in their problems. I have never seen a famous musician do that. You are truly kind and loyal towards them. Anyway, I have a few questions. Actually I need some help too. I have been playing the guitar for 2 years. When I started I was so devoted into it that I hardly ever put down the guitar from my hand. I played like this for one year then a storm hits my life. Suddenly I become severely ill. I was continuously ill for several months and then at one point I had a breakdown which caused me a memory loss (amnesia). It took me ages to recover. My parents took me Bangkok for treatment cause the doctors in my country couldn?t find a solution. It was the worst thing that?s ever happen to me. Now by the grace of god I am back to myself. But the problem is I forgot my playing, it has become terrible. Now I have to start all over again and im trying. but I think I lost some interest but I don?t want to quit. Please tell me what should I do to get back to it? I mean how do I bring back that devoted love once I had for it? Please suggest me something.

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

I`m very sorry about your situation, but glad that you are "back to yourself". You can`t "force" interest in doing music. It either happens or it doesn`t. Hopefully as time goes by you will become more and more "back to yourself" and that includes the devotion to music you once had. Don`t be hard on yourself because it`s not happening right away. Try to enjoy music first, then as you enjoy it, hopefully that will ignite the spark of wanting to do it more. After all, 2 years is really nothing when it comes to playing an instrument. It is not unusual for people after an accident to start from scratch, even though they had been playing professionally. That is true dedication. All the best.
