  QUESTION:

Let me first start this off by saying "All hail Marty!" There is no doubt in my mind you are some kind of angel sent from heaven to bless us with your absolutely remarkable music. Now, on to the topic at hand. I, unlike a lot of the previous posters, am only starting out and learning guitar. I have big aspirations, and someday hope to be able to play as amazing as you do. I really want this, and it's on my mind all the time, but for some reason I start to get lose confidence in myself and I put the guitar down. As I continue to mess up on things my teacher gives me to practice, I start getting the idea in my head that I'll never be a really good player and I lose sight on what I really want in life. Have you ever felt like that when you first started out? Can you please lend some advice so I can get past this and finally begin reaching for my goals? Thank you so much! Rock on!

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

{I am only starting out and learning guitar. I have big aspirations, } This is a recipe for disaster. Forget about big aspirations! Music is endless, and if done well, you may get a few or even a lot of tiny rewards along the way. You must start with the most modest goals, like just being able to get through a song, and keep your goals always within reach. Then it is just a matter of not quitting. Otherwise you will certainly be let down.
