  QUESTION:

First off,you are my god.Second,I have a question, ive been playing for about 3-years now and ive built up a good amount of technique.I can play most things at a decent speed, however, there are certain licks and songs that I have trouble with, specifically when I work a difficult lick up to speed, the very next morning I have to work it up again, even after ive had a good warmup, and no matter how long I do this,it seems like im never really comfortable playing the lick, sometimes I can pull it off without mistakes other times I botch it all up,its like rolling a die.im not tense,it just feels like my fingers are in random speed mode or something. This has caused me almost to give up on ever being able to master some of the songs I really want to play.Has this ever happened to you? What can I do?I still practice every chance I get.its just a little discourageing to think that all my hard work is going for nothing.Help!

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Easy one! You are working on things way too diffucult for you. After playing for 3 years or so why would you expect to play phrases played by players with upwards of 10 or even 20 years pro experience with the same grace, tone or feeling? It`s just not gonna happen. Work on stuff that is more realistic, stuff that you can MASTER NOW. Forget about `difficult licks` and concentrate on `getting thru songs`. You will get the feeling of accomplishment rather than discouragement. That is the only way...best of luck.
