  Title : scale names

  QUESTION:

You always say "I dont know the name of the scales I use". Yet on your previous Guitar World columns, you can easily name the A natural minor scale. Also on one of your instructional videos, you obviously have knowledge of music theory as you can easily explain what works with a certain chord. i.e using a 7th on an E chord. I believe people ask these questions for educational purposes but whats the difference between your website and a guitar magazine column or an instructional video if one medium gets an answer?

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Good Q-I get SO many Q`s like this that I will make an example of yours. First of all I don`t "use" scales-Have you ever heard ANY part of any of my songs where it sounds like "OK I`m going into a G Lydian scale for a while"? If you say "use" scales, it infers that I have this huge arsenal of scales that I can choose from anytime to make solos or whatever. That is not the case! It is likely that I only know very few from top to bottom! Why? Because there is NEVER, except in a child`s piano recital, the need to go all the way from the top to the bottom of a scale...boring... Of course I can identify some basic scales like A natural minor, etc. but that certainly does not mean that I would ever base anything I play around a decided succession of notes! You can learn A LOT from me and other musicians by using your ear and analyzing phrases and melodies one at a time, and stopping trying to identify everything by name. Knowing all names of techniques, scales, modes, etc---has ZERO to do with making music. Believe it! Stop looking for the `secret` info that will make you better-it does not exist! Constantly try to create music! By failing and succeeding and ONLY by failing, succeeding and remembering how you did what you did, can you ever create music. Got it? Now get to it!
