Hey Marty, first let me tell your music is freakin awesome, never heard so deep full-feeling melodies as yours, you are awesome...
The other day that I was on a family party, there was a electric guitar alone with an amp, it was like looking to me saying "play me!!", and I was looking at it too, so I play it. In front of my family I play some blues, spanish rock classics, some jazz improvisations and people just see me and hear me like just playing some strange music, and after I finished they just clapped, and everybody just tell me that I played good the guitar, but suddenly my uncle told me to sing and play a popular mexican classic song Ranchera, (some kind of country Song but A LA MEXICANA) , and it just freaked me out because is not the genre I prefer to listen and play, so I dont know the lyrics , and I even dont sing, and I dont remember the songs(just some progressions) so I tell my uncle That I dont sing but actually can follow him by ear and he just tell me "waste of time!", and called another family member to sing and play the guitar Rancheras songs.
It was ok to ke until I begin meditating why I cant sing , or remember songs that I dont like too much, and begin asking myself if it was matter of talent. I have always believed that the musician not born with an special gift to be a musician in his life, I think we musicians fall in love with music because of its greatness, and the good feeling that we got when execute music. Because I dont began play guitar since my childhood, I was 14 and now 19 and still playing and learning everyday.
But just matter of opinion Mr. Friedman do you believe in Music Talent? or you think that Music just matter to work on it and experiment?.
