  QUESTION:

Hi Marty! Is a great honour to be able to ask your opinion about the following fact ... During my years of playing, I've found that when you write quite complex songs, avoiding the typical structure (solo after second chorus, you know what I mean) and caring just about good music, no matter how long or technically complicated the song is, everybody says "oh, you play very well" but your work gets completely ignored and you sell a very little amount of copies. On the other hand, there're some crappy bands, with a total lack of originality, quality and everything else, that sells millions and millions. I feel frustrated as musician and sometimes I think that the better I play, the less people will recognize my work. Could you give me some advice? Do I have to go on with this and feel ignored or would it be better to "sell out" and be popular? Thanks for your time! I know you're tired of hearing this, but I had to tell you that you're a great guitarist; no matter if there's people faster than you (and there are lots, you know...) you're the most original player I've listened to in my life.

Best Question in a while!
It all boils down to how you define "better" and "good music". In my opinion, neither of these things have anything to do with being a brilliant musician. Being a 'brilliant musician' is only a small part of making 'good music'. The reason you hear how well you play but get ignored is that Joe 6-pack USA doesn't care how good the playing is and neither do I. The only thing that matters is 'does the music make me feel good enough to spend my hard earned money on it?' The more 'complex' your music is, the more people you alienate. The art of music is playing the kind of music you like the best way you can, and if it happens to be popular good for you. It's not just as easy as 'selling out'. If 'selling out' was all one had to do to make it in music, everyone and their brother would be doing it. Again, great question and best of luck 2 U.
