  Title : What`s exotic?

  QUESTION:

Checking in again Marty! Hope you 're well and enjoying life as always.

What I wanted to ask you about today is about so-called "Exotic Scales" or what purport to be exotic scales.
Thing is, I read a very good tutorial on playing Celtic style guitar (just got into a Folk-Rock band) and the author explained that people make the mistake of looking for "Celtic scales" etc that don't actually make the music Celtic. Anyway I realised that it's the same with most of these "Exotic Scales" - I've tried these (Indonesian and so forth) and I get less exotic feel than when I use the patterns I normally use (pentatonic, diminished and blues scales mainly). So I figure that "Exotic" playing doesn't rely on choice of scale but on the association that the phrases & voicings have to different types ("ethnicities" if you like) of music. I can get an awesome "exotic" phrase with a minor pentatonic for instancr but not with a so-called exotic scale.

Thanks and respect Marty - please to continue to amaze us.
