  Title : Cacophony terminology

  QUESTION:

How's it goin? Firstly, I'd like to say you are one of the most innovative and creative players out there, and that you get nowhere near the type of recognition you deserve, at least in the US.

Anyway, my question is regarding Cacophony. I am a big fan of you and Jason's work on those CDs, and in trying to learn the licks, I noticed that a good deal of them are unconventional, and sometimes just plain weird in their phrasing and/or organization.

My question is how did you and Jason go about writing those solos? Did you write out of pure improvisational skill, or would you guys just jam and say things like "Dude, what if we tried inverting this arpeggio and added a harmonized diminished sequence?" I'd like to know simply out of morbid curiosity and to maybe glean some ideas for my own writing.

Keep up the great work bro!

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Jason and I rarely, if ever, spoke in musical terminology. It was more like, I`ll play this, you wanna play that? Or maybe you can play me another idea? I feel it`s always better to hear an example than have it explained to you.
