Hiya Marty, hope you're well. I just had a comment about
the answer you gave to the guy's question, "Bad guitar days". You say that he should forget warming up, metronomes etc, and just
play his favourite songs; however, I've got to say, I think that would be losing out: not that I'm arguing with you (hell,
YOU'RE the melodic genius here) but doing exercises to a metronome, especially on acoustic guitar, really strengthens the hands
and improves your co-ordination no end, certainly as far as using the right fingering goes. I think what a guitar player needs to
do is to get maybe 20% technical exercise, 80% playing music that they feel good playing, and also keeping and building up a record
of interesting phrases and licks that they want to use in their own music. That's what I do, and I've had quite a few people come
to me for lessons, even though they've been playing for longer than me (sometimes a lot longer). How would you rate this kind of
approach, anyway? I know it works for me, but do you know many players who do it like I do? Peace & big mugs of beer! |
