Title : What is going on here?

  QUESTION:

Dear Marty,
You said In an earlier question that you don't use or know scales, and that you know your Intervals pretty well. How Does that work? Do you just know how different notes sound over chords?
And Why is it that if you don't know or use scales, you magically play them in some of your songs songs?
Please reply, I really want to understand this concept.

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

[Do you just know how different notes sound over chords?] That's absolutely it. When you play over chords long enough you develop an ear for what sounds like what over what.
Also, of course I USE scale patterns at times, it's just I don't know the names or modes or anything like that. Plus a lot of my 'scalar' passages are what I have made up that fit my fingering, so they may resemble scales at times, but they may have a note or two changed from the traditional scale. Great question!
