  QUESTION:

Hi, Marty! You are by far one of the best improvisers in the world. What REALLY amazes me is your ability to arpeggiate awesome and beautiful passages in the heat of the moment. And the way you bring life to rather unmusical riffs when you play over them. (by that I mean Dave Mustaineīs crazy riffs.) I donīt think that can be learned by watching any instructional video. (Though I will be getting me your new one!) When did you realize you have the gift and how did you learn to execute your ideas into improvised solos so well?? You are amazing!!
PS: PLEASE come and play in Finland!

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Thanks very much for the kind words.
I don't think making music well is a gift so much as the result of a lot of continuous hard work. Improvising is like a language, the more thought that goes into expanding your vocabulary, the more interesting and colorful your speaking will be. So just get educated!
