Title : Picks and clear tone

  QUESTION:

Dear Marty, I love all of your work...you're so good it's nuts! Ok, so I wanted to know what kind of picks you use and why. I normally play with 1.0mm Dunlop Tortex picks. I just used a .6mm tortex and it was really different! It seemed to have less annoying "pick attack" sound and a purer note...but at the same time, i had less control cause the thin pick was more "floppy." What are your thoughts on picks, control and tone? I know you're not big on sweep picking these days, and you stress melody more...but i have one question maybe you can help me with. When i plam mute and sweep, i get to much picking sound (clicking of pick on strings) and not some much the notes. But when i don't palm mute (i think this is what you do) it gets really muddy sounding. Yet when i listen to your early Cds, you and jason both have really clear sweeps. That's actually why i started using a thin pick today...just to experiment. By the way, i don't use a ton of gain...and i'm using JB pickups...so it really should be clearer that it sounds now. What can i do?
