  QUESTION:

Hi Marty,
My name is Jordi from Girona (spain) and now I'm about 28yo. I just want to make you the million dollar question:
How you can make a riff and make it sound unique? I mean you can have your own stile phrasing and soloing but how can you make a riff without sounding like this or sounding like that. This really gets me upset and blocks my mind a lot!!
Please what can you tell me about this!

Thanks for all PEACE and LOVE for YOU and for ALL

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

The answer is simple. A 'riff' doesn't have to be all that unique. Just about every riff (in rock anyway) sorta sounds like another riff by another band. If you try to make it TOO unique no one can relate to it anymore. Therefore start off by taking someone else's riff that you like a lot, and changing a few notes and beats here and there. You may surprise yourself!
