QUESTION: |

Hello Marty! I\'ve read your article about guitarist\'s health, so I want to ask you question about it.I\'m 20 years old guitarist from poland, and I\'ve been playing for about 10 years.I\'m focused on high-shred playing,so I practice a lot..I\'ve got terrible problem..For example: one day I practice for (let say) 8hours, and everything is all right, but when i grab guitar the next day i can\'t play things i played the day before.frankly talking i don\'t have any body warm-up exercices or stuff like that..maybe it\'s because of that?I want to practise as long as possible per day but how should i prepare my organizm to that? What is going on with me?! one day, i play the most crazy licks, and the other day i can\'t do that...I can\'t fell confidence of what i\'m playing if you know what i mean..Marty please help me solve this problem... keep on rockin\' man!!!Your solos were and are the bible for me!!:) your big fan from poland-jack
Thanks |

HI Jack, I know this problem. This comes from playing things that are very difficult. You are trying to play things that are right at the limit of what you are able to play. Some days you can play it, some days you can't. You have to ask yourself, WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DO I WANT TO PLAY? To be able to play 'crazy licks' as you say is fine but you need to redefine your goal as a player. Those 'crazy licks' are not going to make you any more valuable as a player. What you must do is develop consistency with stuff that is EASIER than your 'hardest licks', and play with consistency. Hard licks are not nearly as impressive as good music, or music that you love. So start thinking that way, and don't worry if you can't play to the ultimate potential of your playing every single day. Babe Ruth didn't hit home runs EVERY day, and some days he even struck out! But he always tried his best and that's all you should ask of yourself. Good luck! |
