  QUESTION:

Hi marty,

just wondering how a band can make in this day and age where so much music is manufactured and fabricated to make money. music videos are just ads for clothing, cars, and while i like seeing the hot chicks in videos, i think the only reason they are there is to grab your attention and make you watch while listening to the music.

anyway, my complaints over (im sure you dont agree at all with my view, and i understand) im just wondering how an artist is supposed to get on the radios with something truly original (and not a ripoff of whoever's big at the moment)

It just seems to me that the music out there today is so boring, so predictable. I want to do well, and be in a popular band, but i want to make creative, original stuff (that most people dont seem to like)

How do you break the barrier and be both successful and original?

Sorry for the rant, i totally understand if you dont answer,

thanks

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Fact is, the people in charge of actually LAYING OUT MONEY for new artists are being extra cautious because one money loser artist can cost them their jobs. The more 'original' or 'unique' and artist is, the smaller the 'built-in market' is, therefore the less desirable of an investment that artist is to the company that would bankroll it. But this is nothing new!! It has always been this way and will continue. If you were an investor, would you lay out YOUR money on something that is similar to an already proven success or take the chance on completely uncharted territory? Music 'business' 101. Good q, though.
