  QUESTION:

Dear Mr Friedman,
I was wondering if you think there is any place in the music industry for shred/neo-classical guitarist today. I have been playing guitar for only 6 or 7 years but i feel that I can out play just about any new guitarist with an album in the last 8 years and it really makes me mad. thanks for your time

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

The genre you mention is totally on the 'fringe' of the music industry. For all intensive purposes, it pretty much does not even exist. The only way to survive in the 'industry' is to create something that people want to buy.
And by the way, when was the last time you purchased something because the player 'out played' anyone else? Reexamine that mindset, and view music in a 'teamwork' context. I would suggest joining a band. Best of luck.
