Hiya Marty!
Greetings from Australia! I'm an 18-year old guitar-slinging bloke from country NSW in Australia and planning to do some travelling to Japan, so I wanna know: What are THE touristy attraction/hotspots/things one wouldn't wanna miss over there? Do you recommend staying in a ryokan? CHEERS BUDDY! KEEP ON ROCKIN'!

Ryokan (traditional Japanese inn)-definitely!
Also, go to Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Harajuku in Tokyo. Go to Kyoto by bullet train, and stay in the ryokan there. If you have more time, continue on to Osaka. Go to a concert, you will be blown away by the acoustics. Enjoy.
