Hi Marty, I've always loved your playing and find it incredibly inspirational to me as a lead guitarist/musician. I hope my question doesn't piss you off, but I was just wondering how you yourself view your past work not only in Megadeth, but particularly in Cacophany? I mean, you've said some slightly negative stuff about heavy metal, Megadeth, and several respected virtuoso guitarists while you've hailed slick and simple pop music as your favorite for years. While I do understand your taste for melody and beauty, something seems contradictory and I know it makes some of your older fans feel a bit confused. If you listened to Cacophany or Megadeth as a new band you've never heard before, would you love it? Better than Brittany Spears or J-Pop?
Oh, also for the record: how long did it take you and Jason to write, say, "Go Off" the song and memorize it??! To me, not only is it INCREDIBLY hard to play, but I can't really comprehend where you'd even start to write something like that.
Thank you so much! |

I like tons of different kinds of music. There is room for everybody. I have always been a huge pop fan, while I still love aggressive heavy music too. It just when you get known for doing one thing, people can't believe that you can enjoy anything else. I like the music I have released very much.
"Go Off" didn't take long to write or memorize. The intro was inspired by a piece of music by my friend Ron Jarzombek that Jason and I heard at Mike Varney's house. I don't wanna say we ripped off his idea, but his playing floored us so we had to try to come up with something sicker... |
