  Title : Hey Marty

  QUESTION:

Marty, First off I think your new music is awesome, unlike anything I have ever heard. It sounds totally fresh and unique, never heard such killer guitar playing in such context of music. To call you a brilliant musician is an understatement. I would say you and Jason Becker are my all time top influences on my guitar playing and song writing. Anyway I do have some questions for you as well, In your first instructional video you did for Hotlicks, (Exotic Metal Guitar) you get deep into theory and construction of solos over chord progressions and you stressed how important it is to think about what you play. Well I was wondering how you learned all of what you know about theory and if your approach to playing is still the same as it was back in '87-89, or do you basically play more by ear nowadays and not really think out what you are going to play? Thanks so much for everything!,Zach

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

I learned my theory basically by listening to a ton of music while playing my guitar at the same time. All by ear. I play equally by ear now as I did then. Sometimes I feel it would have helped to have learned some reading, but not often.
Thanks for your kind words.
