Title : Cutting Through the mix

  QUESTION:

Hi Marty, I am physically disabled and I wanted to let you know that your music has inspired me to do something positive with my life and play music. My question is this, I have a crate solid state amp and I cannot seem a good setting for the gain channel it ends up sounding like mud and swallows up my bass player. Is there a trick to getting a gain setting that cuts through and doesn't mask the bass player. Thank you

  MARTY'S ANSWER:

Hi Sean, start with having the bassist adjust his tone to you. Then take gain off of your rig and replace it with volume. "Less gain, more volume" is a phrase that I have repeated many times in my career. Start there and try to let your ears guide you. Best of luck.
