  MARTY'S ANSWER:

I hold the pick that way because I don't like the sound of MUTED NOTES in solos. My right hand is away from the strings so they can ring clearly. When I play a solo or melody, I want the notes to have as much PITCH as possible, even at the risk of sounding sloppy. Pitch is the most important thing to me, and when you mute notes, it really doesn't matter what notes you play, or in what order, they all sound pretty much the same. So what's the point of even playing THOSE PARTICULAR notes. Notes you play are a conscious or subconscious choice, and if I'm going to take the time to play them, I want my choices to be heard. And there u have it!
